The relationship began with excitement

I ran to the door when the package arrived and was thrilled to know the bodybugg was here for me to use at last–at long last. Finally I can take a turn for the better in my now seemingly professional Yo-Yo dieting. No–I have not gained back the 90-something pounds I lost, but a good solid 20-25 keeps sticking to me like glue. Perhaps those playground antics were right and maybe I am made of glue. I have of course battled it off with great resolve and determination then allowed it to creep back on me while I am not looking at the food in my hand.

So, with this in mind I remove the B-Bugg from the package and install the battery to it. Here was lesson one, if you install the battery wrong it vibrates and heats up–just saying that is what it does. So, once I had the battery in correctly and strapped this on my arm I felt empowered, elated–I am going to finally have the piece of the puzzle I wanted! Of course, now I am reminded of the sage advice “Careful what you wish for….”

Let me share a little bit about this B-Bugg before I go further, this is worn on your arm and it uses mathematical data based on your movement and body temperature etc to see how many calories you are burning each day. You plug it into the USB and share it with the web based program that tells you how many calories a day you need to eat and how many you need to burn in order to achieve your fitness goal. You choose to add muscle, lost fat or maintain–I picked lose fat. So, now the program generates a basic meal plan based off the survey that you fill out on what you like to eat, when and how often. To be honest, I follow the calorie guidelines but at the point I am in I do not need the exact meal plan to follow. Now, the B-Bugg follows your calories in and for 24 hours a day it monitors your calories out–your movements.

So, for the first week I logged my calories, which is “old hat” for me, I love logging calories and have used Fitday and Diet Power for years. However, the constant logging of movement done by B-Bugg is a new game. it even counts your steps at night when you get up to pee–oh and I am pretty sure I sleep walk now–thanks to the guilt B-Bugg has laid upon me.

Each day I would eagerly plug this in–”I did well today, I moved a lot today!” I would tell myself. Then–then he would chime in, the buzz of the Bugg letting me know the tally is complete, feeling the dread as I look at the screen. “Did you even move out of bed today?” I feel like he is asking me? So I run a tally of my activities–of my workout that day and check it again–maybe this is for an hour or two, can’t be for the whole day! I check the USB plug and hear the Bugg ask me–”Why did you want me if you are barely alive, you hardly move at all–THIS is why you are FAT!” WOW–what an awakening to my sloth like life–I now feel more accountability and a dysfunctional need for approval from this mechanical abusive boyfriend I am in love with.

When I plug it in now each morning I am checking to see how many calories I may have used at night while I am asleep, while he is strapped to my body measuring each heart beat and step I take. My husband has already asked me why B-Bugg has to be on me all the time–and yes I have checked to see how many calories I may have burned during sex. I look at each hour of the day to see how busy I looked, to remember what it was I was doing and there is no room for excuses–I cannot lie about my lethargy to the B-Bugg–he knows.

So, week one is done, it was just to get used to the program and see what I do on a daily basis–what I do is clearly next to nothing. This new week I will get the approval of the little grey man and he will be pleased with the progress I make and shocked I still have time for my addiction to facebook and to clean up after my family. I may have to constantly jog in place to do it though……
