I am so sick of hearing the press take these PEOPLE and lay them on a high pedestal and then wait for them to seemingly fall.
MLB– hall of fame outcasts– know what? They ALL are taking performance enhancing drugs–all of them. I am not sure what sort of rose colored world people live in where they feel they can demand such outstanding sports performance and pay out millions of dollars towards that performance not including the millions more in sponsorships and then expect them to not over perform their human capacity.Pro- Athletes take performance enhancing drugs, get over it. He did not kick puppies into sewer drains or slay the household pet of the poor family down the block and laugh like a school girl while doing it. He took performance enhancing drugs to perform better. *gasp shock horror* He hurts no one by doing this, aside from any chance at the hall of fame. Which to me is also a load of CRAP, if I injected my dog with “performance enhancing” drugs I am sure he would not be able to hit a home run, play 14 games in a row or even move faster from his food dish to the couch. Yet somehow an athlete is “caught” and we the collective whole, feel they some how cheated the world and they are no longer an exceptional athlete.
Mike Phelps takes an opportunity to behave like a typical college kid and it is blasted all over the media and suddenly he is no longer a “proper” role model to grace my cereal box. The same cereal box which is laden with artificial chemicals and ingredients that are largely the contributor to childhood obesity ,but I digress. The real point is that deviant Phelps was seen smoking pot! In Colorado, wasn’t it? That state is decriminalized– so if you are caught with under an ounce of marijuana you are subject to–hanging? No. Jail time? No. Community service? No. You pay a $100 fine. That is the level of that particular crime there. I am lucky enough to not have any driving violations in my driving record. Rumor has it they also give you fines, some even over $100! Since that would put me on the same criminal level as the record winner gold medalist Phelps, I can expect that I would be taken into custody and taught stern lessons on how to not be a deviant of society.
I keep hearing the words “role models” in regards to pro athletes when they do something wrong. Role model is defined as: a person who serves as a model in a particular behavioral or social role for another person to emulate. So, we are looking at their social role? We can’t allow our kids to smoke pot and take steroids and park in the no parking lanes! So, no more baseball, Olympic sports, no more watching the President give speeches,no more going to church, no more of anything really. Forget about the parent setting the example, we are paying these people tens of millions of dollars to take the ownership of our actions off of us.
“Your Honor, my son was mislead by his role models. We let him watch a lot of baseball as a young boy thinking it was innocent. However, now we see the error of MLB and are so sorry we ever exposed them to the corrupt world of sports.”
We,the parents, are the role models. Our children know us, interact with us and do mimic our particular behaviors in social roles. I do not know Phelps personally, nor do I know Alex Rodriguez or anyone else defamed in the Mitchell report. I would not leave my kids in a room alone with these people because I do not know them. Why is it we feel we can judge them on a super human level all the time? Why can’t we allow them the mistakes or career choices with their own lives and not somehow pretend it has anything to do with us,their fans–let alone pretend it has anything at all to do with our own children.
